GAME OF THRONES meets GRACELING in a new fantasy series by bestselling author Kaitlyn Davis.

Jinji has been haunted by the death of her twin brother for ten years. Now, on the dawn of her joining, the nightmare that claimed him has returned for her.

Prince Whylrhen is determined to prevent the past from repeating itself. His kingdom is expecting a new heir, and he will stop at nothing to keep the child safe.

Though they've never met, the two share a deep secret—magic. Jinji can weave the elements to create master illusions and Whylrhen can pull burning flames into his flesh. But neither of them knows what they are truly capable of until a chance encounter brings them together. For their story has played out before, in a long forgotten time—an age of myth that is about to be reborn…

Thank you so much for doing this interview for Creating Serenity.

Thank you for having me!

How did The Shadow Soul start for you? Image, Idea, Dream?

Idea! The first chapter to be exact! I’m not sure how it popped into my head, but way back in high school I got an idea for an epic fantasy book that began with the main character losing her family and fleeing from her home.

Well, once I finished my MIDNIGHT FIRE series last spring, I was on the prowl for new inspiration. I brainstormed new paranormal romance ideas, but nothing stuck, and then I decided to read through some of my old files. I came across this book I wrote in high school, which I had totally forgotten about (it was called The Stone of Truana…hahaha). The original novel was crap—BUT I grabbed onto this first chapter idea, and it suddenly became a life of its own. New characters and an entirely new, original story popped into my head. All about dragons no less!

Did you have any growing pains with this series?

Surprisingly no! Jinji and Rhen, my two main characters, were both real people right from the beginning. Each one had a distinct personality that spoke to me—it was really easy to jump into their minds and tell their story.

Rhen is the charismatic prince loved by everyone. He will do anything to protect his family and his kingdom. But underneath it all, he is lonely and craves the attention of someone who truly understands him, in a way no one ever has.

Jinji however is the strong, silent type. She endures terrible hardship but finds the strength to persevere. Her loneliness is that of loss, not of wanting. She had love and understanding, but it was stolen from her. Now, revenge is on her mind.

Do you have a message you try to convey when writing a story?

For THE SHADOW SOUL, there is no moral of the story per se, but I do think my novel focuses on the ties that bind families and the empathy that binds total strangers. Not a message, but more of an exploration of compassion. My characters, as with real people, tend to be motivated by love—either lost or desperately trying to be held onto.

What are you reading right now?

I’ve been in total epic fantasy mode since starting THE SHADOW SOUL! I just finished The Winner’s Curse (which was great!) and now I’m moving onto The Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson!

Are there any authors (living or dead) that you would name as influences?

So many! For THE SHADOW SOUL especially, I need to give a shout out to Tamora Pierce! The Song of the Lioness was the first fantasy book I can ever remember reading, and it was love as first sentence. As a young girl, I gobbled every one of Tamora’s books down and that fostered a love of fantasy that only grew with time.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

Sleep… Okay, just kidding, I’m hopefully more interesting than that! Lots and lots of marketing! Which still isn’t interesting… 🙂 I love photography (I’ve designed all my own covers), I read whenever I can, and I abuse my netflix account!

I read that you wrote back when you were using crayons. What is your favorite utensil now?

My MacBook Air! I take it with me wherever I go. It’s actually a problem… But for handwriting, I use a fine-point sharpie, the more colorful the better!

How did you break into the industry?

Sheer force of will! Self-publishing is definitely an uphill battle, but I finally feel like I’m gaining momentum. And I am so excited to launch a new series into the marketplace!

What is your writing style? Do you create outlines for your writing or do you just sit and type away?

Outlines! I’m an obsessive planner 🙂 But when I get a great idea, I’ll veer off the path and see what happens! And then re-outline…

What is your next project? What have you been working on recently?

The sequel of course! As you mentioned in your review, THE SHADOW SOUL ends on a bit of cliffhanger (sorry I’m not sorry!), so I jumped right into book two—THE SPIRIT HEIR! So far, I’m loving the way the story is progressing!

Do you listen to music while writing? If so, what’s on your playlist!?

Country is my jam! But if I had listened to it while writing, my main character Rhen (you know, the prince in a fantasy medieval-esque society) might have ended up in a cowboy hat—the horror!

Do you have a guilty pleasure?

Tumblr… I waste so much time on Tumblr…

Best vacation spot ever…

Maybe it’s the arctic vortex speaking, but I’m going with Hawaii! It is paradise! 80 degrees everyday, beautiful beaches, and NO mosquitoes!

Thank you so much for taking the time to indulge my curiosity!

Thank you! And thank you so much for reading THE SHADOW SOUL!
