Ok… I really wanted to like this!
Firstly, the cover. Oh my goodness. I nearly didn’t accept the invite to review because of this cover. Knowing this is going to be about zombies, I overlooked that and dove in.
The first five chapters are about the couple. Which is great. Except that I didn’t really feel them. First Diane is talking about how she feels about Jackson and she’s excited as she’s getting ready for their wedding which is minutes away. Sadly, the back and forth in time did not really give me any feeling for her. I had no excitement at all about their getting married nor their relationship at all! I think the author really wanted the readers to fall in love with the couple and see them for who they were prior to the zombie apocalypse but all it did for me was keep the book at a really slow, nearly stagnant state. And this was just the first five chapters.
I was sticking with it though! The wedding is happening and they are standing there looking at each other. A few weird things start happening but they are not paying too much attention as I mean, they ARE getting married! Finally the priest says man and wife and then ALL HELL breaks loose!
The sad thing is, I think I was already lost. As I said above, I really wanted to like this but I’ve read so many great zombies stories, and some that are even romance, that my bar is set pretty high. The story is interesting and the couple especially is the fun part about this book. They will go through hell for each other but, for me, I knew it but I didn’t feel it. I think the back and forth of the plot really got to me. It can be good at times, but there was a lot of background in this and I just do not know why it was needed.
All in all it was a good book. Major zombie fans may enjoy it as there is enough blood and guts in here to go around! Definitely a plus for me! I just really wanted to feel more for the characters. Ended on an interesting note though!
This is Greg McCabe’s first book so I am curious about what is up his sleeve next. Should be good!
