The Haunting of Sunshine Girl is the first in a frighteningly good new series based on the popular YouTube sensation The Haunting of Sunshine Girl Network, created by Paige McKenzie. In that place where you're more asleep than awake any more, I hear something else. A phrase uttered in a child's voice, no more than a whisper: Night Night. Something freaky's going on with Sunshine's new house . . . there's the chill that wraps itself around her bones, the giggling she can hear in the dead of night, and then the strange shadows that lurk in her photographs. But the more weird stuff that happens, the less her mum believes her. Sunshine's always had a quirky affiliation with the past, but this time, history is getting much too close for comfort . . . If there is something, or someone, haunting her house, what do they want? And what will they do if Sunshine can't help them? As things become more frightening and dangerous, and the giggles she hears turn to sobs and screams, Sunshine has no choice but to accept what she is, face the test before her and save her mother from a fate worse than death.

My Thoughts

Absolutely amazing ghost story! From page one I was on the edge of my seat.

I loved the characters and the fact that although a bit odd, Sunshine still winds up being a character I completely love. Actually, it’s her little quirks that make me love her all the more. The fact that they added up to mean something is nice but I would have liked her without it meaning something.

The plot was great. Not too crazy in the beginning. But the authors continue to add just a bit more, and more, and more until I was on the edge of my seat with curiosity for how much Sunshine and her mom can take! Creep factor was definitely up there even for someone that enjoys reading and watching horror, like constantly! Well done!

I also really enjoyed how the information was given. A bit at a time. It flows with the storyline. Nolan also makes total sense. He meshes quite well with Sunshine even with her weird gagging whenever she gets too close to guys. Everything is explained! I love it!

And with everything being explained, don’t start thinking that you will not have questions at the end. I think I have more questions because I received some answers. They were not just not enough to explain the mentor or how all this is about in the first place.

And the mentor! Do not get me started on this jerk. I am not sure if I like him (obviously) but I am curious what Sunshine is going to do about him and his ideas. Some of which were brought to light in this story but I think there is a lot more behind this guy. The fact that he is a mentor but leaves everything to chance is a bit ridiculous and I really hope he has some good reasons for it! Still not sure if I like him…

As for Sunshine and Nolan, they have so much ahead of them. Although this sort of ended on a cliff hanger with the whole mentor thing, there is so much! I cannot wait for the next book and recommend this to anyone who enjoys paranormal.

Sadly I have not seen the Youtube series but I want to now! Loved the book even without seeing it.

The Author

Paige: Paige is the teen star of the hit YouTube channel The Haunting of Sunshine Girl. What began as a simple “girl and her haunted house” story has grown to a multi-webisode network with stories of zombies, ghosts, Sasquatch and lots of Sunshine! Full of positivity, humor and plenty of scares, The Haunting of Sunshine Girl has allowed Paige to spread her unique brand of adorkableness to other teens (and many adults) all over the world! At the age of 16, Paige (along with her mother, actress Mercedes Rose and producing partner, Nick Hagen) co-founded the production company Coat Tale Productions. The Weinstein Company recently optioned The Haunting of Sunshine Girl for a multi-book and screen deal. Paige lives in Portland, Oregon.

Alyssa: I was born in Stanford, California, and even though I moved across the country to New York when I was six years old, I still think of myself as a California girl.
Like so many writers, I grew up loving books. I loved stories so much that when there was nothing to read, I wrote my own stories just to give myself something to read. And when there was no pen and paper to be had, I made up stories and acted them out by myself. I played all the parts, and I was never bored.
