Is Christmas really the most wonderful time of the year? New Yorkers Robyn Lane and Sidney Bellows aren’t so sure.
Robyn has always dated struggling creative types. For once, her parents would love her to bring someone with health insurance and a 401(k) to their Chrismukkah celebration. Her actor boyfriend doesn’t qualify. While across town, Sidney’s professional life already belongs to her parents. She’s an attorney at her father’s law firm and she works tirelessly to keep her love life private. If she brings her lawyer boyfriend to their annual Christmas extravaganza, her parents will have the wedding planned by New Year’s Eve.
A mutual friend playfully suggests they trade boyfriends for the holidays. The women share a laugh, but after copious amounts of wine, decide The Boyfriend Swap could be the perfect solution. This way, Robyn can show off her stable attorney boyfriend and Sidney’s high-society family will take no interest in her flakey actor beau.
It’s a brilliant plan—in theory. In practice—not so much. When Will turns out to be the boy-next-door Robyn crushed on hard throughout her teenage years, and Sidney’s family fawns all over Perry like he’s an Oscar-winner rather than a D-list wannabe, one thing is certain: The Boyfriend Swap might just change their lives forever.
You don’t even have to read the synopsis to know this is going to be crazy, right?! If you haven’t read it yet, the quick rundown is basically that both Robyn and Sidney do not want to deal with the pressures of taking their boyfriends home for Christmas.
We’ve all been there. Nobody really wants to deal with nagging parents, friends, brothers, or sisters. Robyn and Sidney are just thinking ahead! On a whim, and while drunk might I add, they come up with this plan. As the girls mull it over, the plan actually sounds better and better.
The poop is going to hit the fan! I don’t play when I talk about poop around here. I can’t since I have five dogs. Sadly, it’s a part of life. I was hoping that Robyn and Sidney were going to get away with this plan without any scars. Without spoilers, let me just say, this character arc is fun! The popcorn type, and a bit of the cringe type too.
The characters are hilarious and fun to read about. Sidney wasn’t my favorite but she grew on me. There were moments when I liked her a LOT less, but she’s a character that is interesting, and crazy, but not in the average way. So, I enjoyed her portions of the story.
But, I found that I couldn’t wait for Robyn’s side. Since this is divided into the two girl’s stories, the chapters are whichever gal is narrating at the time. Robyn’s just felt more to me. More real, more lively, more everything. With Sidney, I was cringing half the time, even when there wasn’t a character arc!
In short, this is a really good, cute read. It’s only my second of Meredith Schorr’s and I can definitely see why everyone talks about her books! Love this and I can’t wait to get my hands on more.
