deFragmentation is an epic prose that captures the soliloquy of an distraught man recounting his relationship with his ex-fiancee, while trying to deconstruct the reasons for their separation. Written by author, and poet, R. Douglas Jacobs (Gethsemane, The Rhymes of Love and Reason), this literary work is a genuine catharsis depicting human frailty of through an intimate, poignant perspective.
I had the good fortune to read R. Douglas Jacobs before so I knew going in that I would most likely adore this as I had his last. Surprisingly, not only did I love this, he elicited even more emotion than before!
I love poetry because there is just so much emotion built into it. You cannot read good poetry without feeling all of that emotion pouring out of the verse and into your soul. Not one page was turned before I was completely plugged into his words and transformed to another place.
deFragmentation held even more depth than I imagined. I do not normally read epic poems but this is just tragic, lovely, and beautiful and I could not put it down!
This one delves into a man’s vulnerability about his past and his own creation of his separation with his fiance but also her faults as well. It is like a love letter to her, asking her, while on hands and knees, why, just why could she hurt him so?! As perverse as this poor man’s life had been as a boy he had found love that lifted him like a Beatles song that begs to be sang to the sky and just to then be torn down and thrashed upon the ground!
I stopped to read one page to my hubby who had a gaping mouth afterwards. Pretty much my look the entire time. I cannot say enough about J. Douglas Jacobs. He does not cease to amaze me with his beautiful imagery, astounding usage of words, and just great story telling.
All I ever do is try, driven by purpose
To convey in the hope of connecting-
To achieve with aim of succeeding;
But the energy I endlessly employ,
From the standpoint of trying,
Is counterproductive and futile,
Given that the renderings I produce
Are artistic depictions that fail,
And fail greatly, in being able
To connect with the ordinary
Who comprise of an establisment
Lacking in imagination to decipher
The arduous execution of talent
From the trending exploitation of hacks.
That is one beautiful page from the beginning… In a word? Gorgeous!
