If A Series Has A LOT Of Books Does It Scare You Away?
Recently I was writing about Sherrilyn Kenyon and how her series is a bit daunting due to having to catch up. I have about ten of the books (I think) but out of all of the ones that are available, it seems like quite a bit to buy.
There is, of course, always the library!
Do you find series with a lot of books daunting? Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series has about 40 books and I love that one. So, I don’t think it’s the amount of book but maybe rather the amount of money that has to be put forward, especially if the library winds up not having a book.
Plus, they just take a lot of time! I re-read Terry Pratchett’s series every year but I take it one book at a time and I don’t rush. If I get the entire series read, then great, but if not, that’s okay too! Not having read any in a series when there’s 40 makes it a little more challenging as I want to haul ass through new books to know what happens next.
That said, I do have some perpetual challenges coming up just for this. I want to finish all of the Cat Who in the Lilian Jackson Braun series and add to my Stephen King arsenal. I’m ashamed to say that there are quite a few of his that I do not even have nor have I ever picked up!
The great thing about choosing to read a series of books is that you know if you really enjoy the author’s writing that there will be another and another and another to always choose from. In some cases, like Terry Pratchett, you don’t even have to read them in order, so it is even more fun to read.
Also, when there are so many to choose from you don’t have to wait a year for the next in the series either! I know Sherrilyn Kenyon has many already published, and like I said, that chick writes like crazy, so I’m sure there’s going to be another few before I get to the end!
What do you think the pros and cons of a long series are?
