16th – 22nd – Who is your favorite children’s books author and why? (submitted by Kitty @ Vicarious Bookworm)

I’m going to be a bit boring here and go with the crowd. I freaking LOVE J.K. Rowling. LOVE LOVE LOVE!

Here’s the thing. When I first started reading Harry Potter, my daughter was around 8. She wasn’t much of a reader, and although very intelligent, she didn’t love reading. She would read darker books, like R.L. Stine and such, which hey, those are fabulous too, but she normally chose books under her grade level. Reading is reading, so I didn’t fuss too much.

Enter Harry Potter! The first she was hesitant on. She didn’t love the beginning and since we read in the evenings, mostly me reading to her, she was just okay with it. I admit, I’m not great with voices and probably didn’t do it justice. But, as she started reading on her own, she delved into the story and became fascinated.

Since then, we have been reading together, and it amazes me that she works at a Shakespeare Tavern as a Stage Manager. She helps actors with their lines, understanding the stories, the nuances behind what Shakespeare meant, and we talk about him frequently. Considering we came from a background where she didn’t like to read at all? I find this amazing and I attribute this to the beautiful storyteller that is J.K. Rowling.

We even recently went to Harry Potter World in Orlando. It was so fantastic and brought us even closer to a story that we now both hold dear.

I bet your answer is a quite popular one. I don’t know that I actually have a favorite children’s author. I know it sounds twisted but I was reading King when I was 10 so does King count? Probably not….

AHHH! I didn’t even think about Stephen King! What a great answer. I don’t think it’s weird. I was reading him out loud to my sister when we were younger. Love him! I had Clive Barker’s Books of Blood when I was around 10 or so. Gotta love it!

As a kid I devoured everything by Enid Blyton and then Judy Blume. I got into Stephen King at a young age and my love of horror then took me away from kids books.

I was so happy when my daughter picked up R.L. Stine. I never read him, but she just devoured his books. I was the same as you, and enjoyed Stephen King, Robert R. McCammon, and Clive Barker. I forgot about Judy Blume! Haven’t seen her stuff around in a while. So fun!
