Welcome to the new Book Blogger Hop!
21st – 27th – Would you stop reading a book if an element of the plot strongly clashed with your personal beliefs, or would you continue reading until you finished finished the book? (submitted by Maria @ A Night’s Dream of Books)
Oh, a political hot button issue! To be completely honest, my belief is that it is much more important to accept people as they are, rather than shunning them for who they are not. That said, if I’m reading something that doesn’t quite mesh, like for instance I’m a bit of a prude so there’s a fine line between what I think is sexy and what I think is going overboard, so I just flip through those sexy scenes and read the rest like nothing happened.
I do try to understand why people ditch great books like Harry Potter, but in reality, I just can’t wrap my head around it. Harry Potter came out when my daughter was struggling with reading. She much preferred reading something way below her education level so tackling something like Harry Potter was a nightmare. I read the first book to her and she got the HP bug. She was about 10 and decided she would read the rest on her own. I love that she was able to grow with the characters as the books came out. Now my daughter is reading circles around me. She works for a Shakespeare theater!
Now, don’t get me wrong, each to their own. Everyone has that right. But books are a way to make us use our imaginations! They help to push you past your comfort zone. Admitting I have a prude for my inner self is hard, but I know and move along with my reading. That said, I don’t normally read those books that are considered soft porn. Whew, that would put me WAY out of my comfy zone!
Do you stop reading if a book clashes with your beliefs?
