December 8- Advice for new bloggers

When I started blogging I was SO EXCITED! I wanted to read everything and I had the time to read just about everything, but not quite. I saw books as shinies and did not want to say no to anything so I read anything and everything that I could get my hands on because FREE BOOKS RIGHT!?
This is what it feels like to get free books:

So, I’m sure you can imagine, the second an author came to me requesting a review, I would have to say yes!

Sadly, this gets overwhelming very quickly. I needed to read to fill my blog with (hopefully great) reviews but the more I read the more frustrated I got with reading. I was pushing myself to read two books a day and my calendar was chock full of requests due. My orgasmic fun came to a screeching halt when every book I picked up felt like I was slowly reading myself to death. I was stressed, underwhelmed with the stories, and instead of being grateful about these books I started getting jaded. This was only a year in!

First, I learned how to say no.

I realized I did not have to have my blog FULL every single day. What I would have done differently, and try to do now, is to give myself a cushion of reviews and posts, sort of like this one, that have nothing to do with sitting down reading a book. It’s faster, I still get to talk about books, but these are less stressful. I prefer to have a month scheduled so I am not having to sit down the day prior and type something out super fast and hopefully, something semi-intelligent! Having that cushion makes life much easier, especially when life gets stressful and I can’t get to the blog!

Then I learned what I liked reading and started saying yes to authors of the genres I loved. This has taken me a while. I ventured out by trying other genres every once in a while and found out things about my reading style that I had no idea at the beginning. My advice here would be to try new genres and styles because you never know!

So, in short, my advice is:

  • Do not overbook!
  • Learn how to say no.
  • Make a cushion. Choose a number of posts that works for you and your lifestyle.
  • Read what you enjoy, BUT try new genres.

Then you can go back to feeling like The Martian.

Feeling awesome. Being awesome!

What advice would you give?

Yes to all of this! I overbook myself even though I should absolutely know better. I am hoping to remedy this is 2017. I have no problem saying no thou, I don’t answer unsolicited emails from authors for he most part. Great advice!
    Thanks for playing along!

I stopped answering when I got bombarded and every once in a while I will if the book really sounds good or to say no. So many authors, so little time! Overbooking is so easy to do. My Netgalley is crazy!
