Twenty-one year old Jeremiah Jacobson is the world's best hockey player, but he wasn't prepared for the frenzy and scrutiny that came with that title. Tom Leonard is an average college sophomore... just a guy trying to find his place in the world as he sorts through issues that are both very real and seemingly insurmountable. Through a chance meeting, these two strike up an unlikely friendship. Their bond is tested when Tom discovers that his idol isn't as perfect up close as he seems from afar. With Jeremiah living a little too much in the moment and with his past catching up to him, will Tom be able to help him before it's too late? From the author of the critically acclaimed

short and sweetWell, I originally thought that my hubby would review this but with the graphics it was difficult getting it to his Nook so I decided to read it and honestly I was surprised. I’m not much of a Graphic Novel person but this looked interesting so I thought, WHY NOT!?

The greats of this are:

  • It is a quick and easy read. I flew through it!
  • The characters are well developed!
  • The storyline is very well done
  • I was thinking about it days later!
  • I’m not huge into sports but somehow Howard Shapiro had me cheering along!

The only downside I have are about the graphics. They are good but with the graphic novels that are out there I think they could be done better, however, my only experience (sadly!) is with The Walking Dead and Sandman by Neil Gaiman! Maybe I’m comparing apples to oranges though. Otherwise, the story itself is really great and I was pleasantly surprised with it.

In short: You do not have to love graphic novels nor hockey to be able to relate and enjoy this!

About Howard Shapiro

Since I decided to start writing children’s stories my goal has been to create characters that adults and kids would care about and be interested in following their journey. And also to create stories that SAY SOMETHING. There are thousands of kids books out there and in my little corner of the book store, I want and wanted to do something that can stand the test of time, be relevant and vital. Plus, make it entertaining and enjoyable to read each and every time. I hope I am succeeding in that goal. I would love to hear from you, so please send me an email at

      Hi Rita:

Thanks for taking the time to write and post your comments! I hope down the road you will change your mind and give “The Hockey Saint” a shot. I send it to a lot of YA and Romance reviewers and they’ll say something similar to what you said… that GN’s (and sports stories) are not a genre that they normally read but that they really liked the story (it is not a sports or hockey story per se, even though the word hockey is in the title) and will check out other GN’s in the future.

Anyway, thank you for giving me the chance to hold up the flag for GN’s and I hope you’ll give it a try at some point! I can promise you, you won’t be sorry if you do!!

      Take care,

      Howard Shapiro

I know! I was originally going to give this to the hubster but the file was quite large so I wound up reading it on my computer. I was pleasantly surprised though! Mel is my sister! I need to add her to the About Serenity section! I twisted her arm to get her to start doing reviews and I may have my hubby helping soon too! 😀

Excellent point, Anna! Believe me, I wasn’t a big fan until I read my first one (a GN) and now they are mostly what I buy and probably the only kind of story/format that I will write. Pls check out “The Hockey Saint” if you get a chance!! Thanks again!!

It was nice! I hate to say it but I sort of think that I enjoy looking at the pictures too. It’s so horrible and fun and sort of like a guilty pleasure! 😉
