Thrilling contemporary romantic suspense from New York Times bestselling author Melissa Marr. Eva Tilling wakes up in the hospital to discover an attempt has been made on her life. But who in her sleepy little North Carolina town could have hit her with their car? And why? Before she can consider the question, she finds that she's awoken with a strange new skill: the ability to foresee people's deaths when they touch her. While she is recovering from the hit-and-run, Nate, an old flame, reappears, and the two must traverse their rocky past as they figure out how to use Eva's power to keep her friends—and themselves—alive. Chilling twists, unrequited obsession, and high-stakes romance drive this southern Gothic, racy thriller—a story of small-town oppression and salvation. Melissa's fans and every YA reader will find its wild ride enthralling.
This is a fascinating mystery that I thought I had totally pegged (with hints from the author) and yet I was completely wrong! Those hints led me in a direction that was so incorrect that I had to laugh at myself when I actually did figure it all out!
What I absolutely loved was that the mystery was really a mystery. There are definitely clues, and actually they killer leaves clues for Eva that he assumes she will be able to interpret and understand. Sadly she just gets more and more confused and upset and as she continues to not understand HE gets crazier. The atmosphere just ratchets up as you go along through the story line and it makes so much sense.
I also really liked the characters. There were reasons behind everyone for doing everything, even the killer. Melissa does a great job of making sure we understand all of the motives, even if the reader doesn’t actually agree with them.
I think I like Eva’s story the most. I really like how Eva’s mom actually is IN her life. For a YA that is almost unheard of and always pisses me off. The parents don’t have to be perfect, and Eva’s aren’t but they DO care and that’s what matters. And Grace and her mom and just fabulous! Again, just more great characters that added to a fabulous storyline.
Even if you don’t like mysteries, this one is thrilling and has enough storyline that the mystery all comes out and while reading you get a great feeling of the characters. There’s a bit of the paranormal thrown in which technically is sort of explained but sort of not, but I think it just adds to the thrill of the entire story.
In short: Definitional recommend!
